The Program

The Andre Anderson Minority Scholarship is meant to celebrate planning and foster increased interest in planning by providing financial support for graduate-level planning students who are members of underserved ethnic groups and who are enrolled in either (1) a PAB-accredited urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida or (2) an urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida that is actively seeking PAB accreditation.

One scholarship for $2,000 is available.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be a member of one of the following underserved ethnic groups, as defined by the U.S. Census: Asian, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, Pacific Islander or Alaskan Native
  • Be enrolled full-time (as defined by either the university or the graduate planning program) during the semester in which the award is given in either (1) a PAB-accredited urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida ( FAU, FSU, UCF, UF, USF) or (2) an urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida that is actively seeking PAB accreditation.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Be able to document their need for financial assistance
  • Intend to work as a practicing planner upon graduation in local, state, or federal government or for a planning consulting firm or a not-for-profit planning organization

Note:  Prior recipients of any fellowship or scholarship administered by the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association are not eligible.

Application Requirements

  • Financial Need information
  • Personal statement describing how receiving this scholarship will enable the student to contribute to the planning field
  • One letter of recommendation in support of the student’s application and career goals
  • An unofficial transcript
  • A resume, including any professional experience
  • Documentation of permanent residency status, if applicable

Selection Criteria

A Selection Committee appointed by the Chapter President will review applications and select scholarship recipients.  The Committee will assess applications using the following criteria in order of importance:

  • Commitment to planning as reflected in personal statement and resume
  • Academic achievement and/or improvement during previous semesters
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Financial need – both absolute need and need relative to tuition costs

The Award Process

  • The Selection Committee will review applications and select recipients within two weeks after the application deadline.
  • The recipient will be notified by the Chapter Executive Director within three weeks of the application deadline.
  • The award recipient’s name and institution will be published in the next issue of Florida Planning Magazine and posted on the website.

Local APA Florida sections are encouraged to involve recipients in chapter and section activities and provide mentoring.
