Building Development Director

Under general direction, plans, organizes, supervises and directs administrative and professional work by leading, mentoring, and motivating staff with the projects, operations and services of the Building Development Division; manages the development and implementation of City policies and procedures compliant with Florida Building Code (FBC), local codes and ordinances, and state and federal laws.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in design, construction, public administration or related field and/or ten (10) years of commercial/residential building construction experience with at least five (5) years of experience at the lead or supervisory level. Preferably possess five (5) years of jurisdictional building department experience at supervisory level and meet the parameters per F.S. 468.609 to obtain a State of Florida Provisional Building Code Administrator License within three (3) months placement into this position and a State of Florida certified Building Code Administrator prior to the expiration of the provisional license.
- Requires regular travel in and around the City and Pinellas County; frequent meetings and events at unusual hours and days requiring flexibility.
- Requires a valid Florida driver license.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Provides daily guidance and direction to subordinate staff in the provision of services; oversees the review and issuance of building permits; oversees operations of the Business Tax Receipts Program; prepares and presents items before the Council at both workshop and City Council meetings, such as rewriting ordinances; and involves self on boards.
- Maintains involvement with different conferences and committees regarding certain City projects; selects, hires, trains, motivates, and disciplines subordinate staff; ensures employees are properly trained and certified; solves problems as they arise; makes final code interpretations.
