Candidate for President-Elect Alessandria 'Ali' Palmer
My experience has prepared me for the role of President-Elect through a combination of Chapter leadership, professional practice, and a consistent commitment to advancing planning in Florida.
Through my four years of service on the APA Florida Executive Committee, I have gained a strong understanding of the Chapter's governance and operations, contributing to initiatives related to strategic planning, section affairs, communications, and member engagement.
I served over a decade on my Section board, where I gained a detailed understanding of the needs of our members and sections at the local level. I also served as co-chair of our conference committee during this time, preparing for over 800 attendees from across the state.
Over the last 22 years, I have worked across both public and private sectors, for small and large organizations, representing almost all of our members. I bring a collaborative, service-oriented leadership style focused on listening, building consensus, and elevating others. As President-Elect, I am prepared to support the President, advance strategic priorities, and ensure continuity of leadership. I am committed to strengthening member value, expanding professional development opportunities, and positioning APA Florida as the leading voice for planning across the state.
What are the three most important challenges facing APA Florida?
Strengthening member engagement and retention is critical. While sections are active, the Chapter must enhance communication, visibility, and clear pathways for involvement to ensure members remain connected and see value throughout their careers at all levels.
Navigating legislative changes impacting planning practice including preemption and policy reforms is increasingly complex. The Chapter must continue providing timely guidance, education, and a unified voice to help planners respond effectively.
Ensuring relevant and responsive programs and services is essential. Continued investment in conferences, trainings, and education must align with evolving member needs and emerging planning issues to maintain APA Florida's value and impact.
What do you most want to accomplish during your term?
During my term, I want to strengthen APA Florida's value to our members by increasing engagement, enhancing communication, and ensuring every member has clear and easily accessible pathways to get involved. I am committed to advancing our advocacy efforts especially on legislative issues impacting planning such as preemption and tax policy while equipping members with the tools and information they need to respond. I also want to ensure our conferences, training programs, and educational resources continue to evolve to meet emerging needs and reinforce APA Florida's role as the leading voice for planning in the state, and the country.
How would you make sure your efforts are successful?
I would measure success by progress toward the Chapter's strategic goals, developed with input from each section, and by accountability in carrying out those priorities. Success also requires ongoing feedback from members through open communication and established tools such as the member survey. I would look at member engagement and participation levels, the effectiveness of our programs and advocacy, and how well initiatives are coordinated across the Executive Committee and Section leadership. By tracking outcomes, listening to members, and adapting as needed, we can ensure APA Florida continues to deliver meaningful value, strong advocacy, and relevant services to its membership.
