Position Statement

APA Florida holds a different meaning for each of our members. For some, like me, APA Florida is where I learn about new ideas and connect with our peers. For others, it's career advancement – APA networking helped me get my job. Through APA, we advocate for better planning solutions.

From my time on APA Florida’s Executive Committee, I have a great appreciation for the fact that the creation of “opportunity” is the greatest asset that APA Florida can provide to each of you. The opportunity to grow through new experiences. To connect. To advocate. To create lasting change.

To inspire.

Challenges abound for Florida planners, from preemptions and other legislation to changing realities, all requiring new toolboxes as we learn from our peers. With planners facing increasing pressure in these new realities, our ability to create opportunities, combined with planning with empathy, will help us create lasting communities and stem the vacancies in planning positions statewide seen today. As your APA Florida President, I will ensure a culture of support and empathy through initiatives that will:

  1. Create a committee that will study and implement needed support systems for planners, from peer and career to emotional;
  2. Encourage career development for young and emerging planners through networking, mentorship, and partnerships with universities;
  3. Advocate for better planning practices and laws through increased dialogue with elected officials; and
  4. Create a President’s forum to listen, and collaborate with you, in creating the toolbox solutions for the challenges you face.

Over the past two years, I have enjoyed, and hopefully fulfilled, your trust in advancing new ideas and connections through our annual conference. I appreciate your support, together, as I seek to forge new opportunities for us, together, as your APA Florida President.
